Balaam was disobedient towards God. He was letting other men use him to hurt the people of Israel.
The man in front of Balaam is an Angel of the Lord.
The donkey saw the Angel but Balaam did not.
The Angel told Balaam to go back to the men who had told him to curse Israel but only say what the Angel said.
After this Balaam knew that who God has blessed no man can bring a curse against them.
