Golgotha
(
At the Cross)

Matt 27:33 (KJS) And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, 34 They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted [thereof], he would not drink. 35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

Left: The garden at the tomb of Jesus.

When the tomb was discovered, excavation showed the signs of a garden in front of it. The garden was re-created to their best guess of what they thought it looked like according to their findings.

John 20:14 (KJS) And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.

It is obvious from the evangelists that it was some well-known spot outside the gate (comp.) #Heb 13:12 and near the city #Lu 23:26 containing a "garden" #Joh 19:41 and on a thoroughfare leading into the country. Hence it is an untenable idea that it is embraced within the present "Church of the Holy Sepulchre." The hillock above Jeremiah's Grotto, to the north of the city, is in all probability the true site of Calvary. The skull-like appearance of the rock in the southern precipice of the hillock is very remarkable.

Left: Golgotha itself.

Easton's Dict. [golgotha] # 1522 Golgotha the common name of the spot where Jesus was crucified. It is interpreted by the evangelists as meaning "the place of a skull" #Mt 27:33 Mr 15:22 Joh 19:17 This name represents in Greek letters the Aramaic word Gulgaltha, which is the Hebrew Gulgoleth #Nu 1:2 1Ch 23:3,24 2Ki 9:35 meaning "a skull." It is identical with the word Calvary (q.v.). It was a little knoll rounded like a bare skull. (cond. left)

The body of Jesus was laid in Joseph's new rock-hewn tomb, in a garden near to Calvary. All evidence is in favor of the opinion that this tomb was somewhere near the Damascus gate, and outside the city, and cannot be identified with the so-called "Holy Sepulchre." The mouth of such rocky tombs was usually closed by a large stone (Heb. golal), which could only be removed by the united efforts of several men #Mt 28:2 comp. #Joh 11:39

Easton's Dict. [tomb] # 3697 Tombs of the Hebrews were generally excavated in the solid rock, or were natural caves. Mention is made of such tombs in #Jud 8:32 2Sa 2:32 2Ki 9:28 23:30 They were sometimes made in gardens #2Ki 21:26 23:16 Mt 27:60 They are found in great numbers in and around Jerusalem and all over the land. They were sometimes whitewashed #Mt 23:27,29

It is not important to me if this place was where Jesus was buried or not.
What is important to me is he was buried in a place like this and

He is not there now!!
