Bible Study Justification
.
Justification
a forensic term, opposed to condemnation. As regards its nature, it is
the judicial act of God, by which he pardons all the sins of those who
believe in Christ, and accounts, accepts, and treats them as righteous
in the eye of the law, i.e., as conformed to all its demands. In
addition to the pardon (q.v.) of sin, justification declares that all
the claims of the law are satisfied in respect of the justified. It is
the act of a judge and not of a sovereign. The law is not relaxed or
set aside, but is declared to be fulfilled in the strictest sense; and
so the person justified is declared to be entitled to all the
advantages and rewards arising from perfect obedience to the law
Roma 5:1 Therefore
being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus
Christ:
2 By whom
also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and
rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
3 And not
only [so], but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation
worketh patience;
4 And
patience, experience; and experience, hope:
5 And
hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our
hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
6 For
when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the
ungodly.
7 For
scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good
man some would even dare to die.
8 But God
commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners,
Christ died for us.
9 Much
more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from
wrath through him.
10 For
if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his
Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
It
proceeds on the imputing or crediting to the believer by God himself of
the perfect righteousness, active and passive, of his Representative
and Surety, Jesus Christ
Roma 10:3 For they
being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish
their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the
righteousness of God.
4 For
Christ [is] the end of the law for righteousness to every one that
believeth.
5 For
Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man
which doeth those things shall live by them.
6 But the
righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine
heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down
[from above]:)
7 Or, Who
shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from
the dead.)
8 But
what saith it? The word is nigh thee, [even] in thy mouth, and in thy
heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
9 That if
thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in
thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be
saved.
Justification
is not the forgiveness of a man without righteousness, but a
declaration that he possesses a righteousness which perfectly and for
ever satisfies the law, namely, Christ's righteousness
2Cor 5:21 For he
hath made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be
made the righteousness of God in him.
Roma 4:6
Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God
imputeth righteousness without works,
7
[Saying], Blessed [are] they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose
sins are covered.
8 Blessed
[is] the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
The
sole condition on which this righteousness is imputed or credited to
the believer is faith in or on the Lord Jesus Christ. Faith is called a
"condition," not because it possesses any merit, but only because it is
the instrument, the only instrument by which the soul appropriates or
apprehends Christ and his righteousness
Roma 1:17 For
therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it
is written, The just shall live by faith.
Roma 3:25
Whom God hath set forth [to be] a propitiation through faith in his
blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are
past, through the forbearance of God;
26 To
declare, [I say], at this time his righteousness: that he might be
just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
Roma 4:20
He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong
in faith, giving glory to God;
Roma 4:22
And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
Phil 3:8
Yea doubtless, and I count all things [but] loss for the excellency of
the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the
loss of all things, and do count them [but] dung, that I may win
Christ,
9 And be
found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law,
but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which
is of God by faith:
10 That I
may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of
his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
11 If by
any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
Gala 2:16
Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the
faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we
might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the
law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
The
act of faith which thus secures our justification secures also at the
same time our sanctification (q.v.); and thus the doctrine of
justification by faith does not lead to licentiousness
Roma 6:2 God
forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
3 Know ye
not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were
baptized into his death?
4
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as
Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so
we also should walk in newness of life.
5 For if
we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be
also [in the likeness] of [his] resurrection:
6 Knowing
this, that our old man is crucified with [him], that the body of sin
might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
7 For he
that is dead is freed from sin.
Good
works, while not the ground, are the certain consequence of
justification
Roma 6:14 For sin
shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but
under grace.
Roma 7:6
But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were
held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not [in] the
oldness of the letter.
